Program description:
This program is a collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention whose remit is to conduct research in malaria, HIV, TB, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections, and other diseases. It is in this mandate that the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) branch has a vacancy to fill.

Position: ASSISTANT RESEARCH OFFICER (2 positions) MR 9
Location: Kisian
Reporting to: Principal Investigator, Kisumu

Essential Requirements:
Bachelors’ degree in public health or related field.
Previous experience of research activities in a field setting.
Previous experience with qualitative research methods
Minimum of one (1) year relevant experience in qualitative research and community mobilization.
Knowledge of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths
Experience with data collection and entry using smart phones

Proven leadership, management, interpersonal, decision making and analytical skills.
Willing to work and reside outside Kisumu

Desirable qualities, skills and abilities:

Experience in research, health and development.
Strong writing and communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
Working knowledge of epidemiological methods.
Experience working in a schistosomiasis and other Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs)
Knowledge of NTDs.
Working knowledge of Dholuo for community mobilization an added advantage
Proficiency in computer usage (word processing, spreadsheet) and e-mail.
Attention to detail and good work ethic.
Flexible and able to work with minimal supervision.
Be able to prioritize tasks.
Must be a team player!
Good judgment in problem solving.
Strong internal motivation and commitment to working towards the elimination of NTDs in Kenya.
Ability to collaborate with counterparts including MOPHS, NGO, Community.

Responsibilities:
Responsible for leading a field team to mobilize communities for community wide treatments, qualitative data collection in accordance with protocol, including providing technical guidance to team members on quality data collection
Troubleshoot logistical and technical issues in the field.
Complete and prepare all data collection instruments in the field and lab
Prepare lab reports and regular progress reports for submission to the laboratory manager.
Work collaboratively with Ministry of Health Team and other partners in study area and in the province.
Work closely with other KEMRI/CDC and NTD Branch projects as appropriate
Ensure that data quality and security is maintained through regular quality assurance checks and reporting to the PI.
Conduct regular performance appraisals of team members.
Perform other duties as assigned by laboratory manager and PI.
Terms of Employment: six month contract as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation
period for the first 1 month. Salary negotiable within the appropriate grade depending on
education, experience and demonstrated competency.
