NEMA Senior Legal Officer job in Kenya

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is established under the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA) No. 8 of 1999, as the Principal Instrument of Government in the implementation of all policies relating to the environment. The Authority invites applications from qualified and experienced candidates for the following vacant positions;

SENIOR LEGAL OFFICERGRADE E6
An officer at this level will be responsible to the Deputy Director, Legal Services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Specific Duties at this level will include but not limited to;

  • Ensuring that all NEMA legal instruments are developed and filed on time.
  • Maintaining records of all legal instruments.
  • Filing legal documents in court.
  • Maintaining and updating the Registry for Multilateral Environmental Agreements in consultation with other government Agencies.
  • Preparing briefs and coordinating preparatory meetings for Kenya’s delegation to international meetings relating to MEA’s.
  • Assisting in the development of by-laws and ensuring that they are in conformity with the Environmental Management and Coordination Act 1999.
  • Liaising with other departments’ staff on drafting of legal documents.
  • Offering technical support to field officers in the enforcement of the environmental laws;
  • Attending court proceedings and advising interested groups and County Authorities on the awareness of the environmental legislation.
Requirements for Appointment
For appointment to this position, a candidate must have:

  • A Bachelor of Law (LLB) or its equivalent qualification from a recognized University.
  • At least four (4) years experience in legal practice.
  • Be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
  • Shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Demonstrated professional competence in legal matters
  • Must meet the requirements of chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya 2010
