Background
GRT is an international humanitarian organization working mainly in Somalia in the fields of protection and
mental health. The organization has been implementing UNHCR-funded projects on improving the response to protection risks faced by refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and IDP communities in Northeastern Somalia
through the provision of psychosocial support. GRT has also been implementing, in partnership with CESVI, a
European Commission funded project on improving protection of children affected by the armed conflict in
GRT PROTECTION COORDINATORSomaliland and Puntland, as well as other European Commission funded projects on mental health which aims
at improving mental health service delivery and mental health personnel’s capacity in Somaliland and Puntland.
Since 2010 GRT has been implementing projects that aim at strengthening prevention and response
mechanisms to SGBV survivors through a community-based approach, funded by the Italian Cooperation,
UNHCR, UNICEF and JCCP. GRT is also implementing a project on improving the response to protection risks faced by street children in a slum in Nairobi.
Within the framework of this project, the organization seeks to fill the position of Protection Coordinator.

Job Description
The Protection Coordinator will be responsible for the overall implementation of GBV programme in Somalia,
together with other relevant GRT staff as well as for the supervision of the Child Protection project in Kenya.
With technical and managerial support, s/he will ensure that the goals and objectives of the interventions are met in a timely and effective manner.

S/he will provide appropriate mentorship to the team and promote coordination among the local stakeholders.
The job duties include overall program development/strategic planning, staff/volunteer management, training,
liaison and coordination with other organizations and donors, capacity building and, monitoring and evaluation.
The Protection Coordinator will use internationally recognized standards (such as the IASC Guidelines) and
companion materials (orientation and training guides, planning worksheets, etc.) as well as national policies,
documents and standards to develop context specific plans, tools, forms, formats, and guides that will facilitate development, implementation, and monitoring/evaluation of GRT interventions.
The Protection Coordinator will be expected to ensure GBV prevention mainstreaming in development, conflict recovery, as well as for emergency preparedness.
The Protection Coordinator will supervise and work directly with Project Managers supervised by GRT Regional Representative.
The Protection Coordinator, under the supervision of GRT Regional Representative, will share the project
outcomes to local, national and international stakeholders/donors for reporting and advocacy purposes.
This position demands a highly-motivated, independent and dedicated individual with strong assessment skills
as well as the ability to effectively advocate. A strong level of English is required as well as working experience in emergency/humanitarian environments, and the ability to handle difficult living and working conditions.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Responding promptly to any protection risk or violation of the rights of women and children met during
his duty by reporting to GRT Regional Representative.
2. Respecting GRT’s Field Operational Procedures and Code of Conduct at all times.
3. Ensuring proper care of GRT’s properties in all GRT offices.
4. Undertaking any other task as indicated by the GRT Regional Representative.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Programme Management
To assume primary responsibility for daily programme management and implementation of activities,
and ensure compliance with the objectives of the programme, work plan and spending plan
To provide ongoing leadership, trainings, and guidance to staff and partner to ensure programming
meets best practice standards and prioritizes the security of beneficiaries and staff
To implement monitoring and evaluation system to document overall program progress achievements,
based on the program logframe and ensuring that data is consistently and accurately collected to inform
ongoing programme design
To fulfill all donors and GRT reporting requirements, ensure the timely preparation and submission of
financial and narrative reports
To perform regular monitoring visits to project sites
To liaise closely with other sectors within GRT to identify areas of collaboration
To ensure that the staff (GRT and partners) provide appropriate services resulting in high quality
medical, psychological, legal, economic and other assistance to beneficiaries
To manage the programme budget in a timely manner in accordance with all GRT and donors’
programmatic and financial protocols and regulations
To contribute to project proposal writing, to identify and elaborate new intervention on the basis of GRT
strategies and in collaboration with GRT Regional Representative
To ensure sound administrative practices with regards to record keeping, procurement and financial
requests
Undertake other duties as required
Capacity Building
To provide mentoring and specific capacity-building for the staff including specific management skills as
well as broadening skills in technical areas (case management, psychosocial support, referral
mechanism, community-outreach and awareness-raising)
To develop staff (GRT and partners) capacity building plans to actively promote staff development, and
design, conduct and/or supervise training on required professional skills as well as on project
management skills
To support staff to implement, follow up and monitor plans for all training and capacity building efforts
Coordination and Advocacy
To ensure active collaboration, information sharing and joint meetings between the programme, local
authorities and other stakeholders to identify and strengthen support for project activities and avoid
duplication
To ensure relations with donors and other local stakeholders under the supervision of GRT Regional
Representative.
To guide stakeholder forums and provide them with technical guidance to develop policy brief on the
needs of women and girls
To facilitate linkage between local community and authorities
To participate in GRT regular meetings, reviews, strategic planning and assist in preparation of new
initiatives for the programme
To feed into any program initiative with data, information and analysis from the field as requested
To ensure that project activities are in line with the local law on sexual violence and international
standards, laws, and policies, in all activities
Nairobi Regional Office
To identify ways to join in-country advocacy efforts to promote a safer environment for women and girls
To actively participate in joint national and international advocacy initiatives on behalf of GRT
Responsibilities:

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
The suitable candidate:

an environment where women and girls can thrive
2. Has the ability and interest to work with a multi-ethnic team in a culturally appropriate manner.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Master’s degree in psychology, in social work or other social sciences, gender/women studies, or other
appropriate fields (or a Bachelor in related field with a long experience in a similar field);
2. Professional training in psychosocial support and counselling.
3. Prior training in gender issues and their application in emergency and conflict recovery, peace building
and development settings.
4. At least 3 years program management experience in the field of gender-based violence and/or other
vulnerable groups such as children at risk and/or extremely vulnerable individuals in conflict-affected
populations with international organizations;
5. Excellent command of spoken and written English.
6. Strong computer skills: must be competent in the use of Windows, MS office programs (Word, Excel),
email programs.
7. Ability to write accurate reports, minutes and to create a database.
8. Strong interest in working in the field of psychosocial assistance and support.
9. Good understanding of humanitarian practices and emergency activities, as well as understanding of
international standards and guidance around GBV in humanitarian settings.
10. Honesty and truthfulness.
11. Capability of working pro-actively and independently, with strong team building skills
12. Demonstrated experience in capacity building and trainings.
13. Demonstrated ability to work with and train local stakeholders such as local authorities, health service
providers and NGOs;
14. Demonstrated experience with all aspects of project management;
15. Demonstrated experience managing and supporting staff;
16. Ability to live and work under pressure in an unstable security environment.
17. Strong negotiation skills, preferably in conflict resolution settings.
18. Experience supervising staff in an international setting.
