INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITYOPEN TO EXTERNAL CANDIDATES

Position Title: Social Work Intern
Classification: Internship – Remunerated
Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya
Duration of Assignment: 2 to 6 months

1. Background
The position shall be based at the IOM Transit Centre. It aims at developing a sustainable
resource centre that will benefit the refugees’ adolescent/youth population by giving them a
positive and safe outlet support to address their concerns.

2. General Functions
Under the overall supervision of the Operations Officer and under the direct supervision of the
Sr. Operations Assistant the incumbent with provide vital opportunities for guidance and
positive discovery to TC youth at the Transit Center.


3. Job Description
a. Hold group and individuals discussions with the refugees to identify and assess the
specific needs during their stay at TC.
b. Identify strengths, resources and challenges of individuals and groups (whose members
have a natural link such as groups of women, teenage girls, boys etc.).
c. Undertake basic skills training for the refugees aimed at building resilience.
d. Offer group and individual counselling forming and conducting group therapies,
relaxation exercise and activities.
e. Regularly and periodically monitor the needs, services provided and progress of the
refugees’ wellbeing.
f. Assess and recognize indications for medical referral.
g. Collect periodic data for program evaluation in order to assess the collective needs and
wellbeing of the refugees.
h. Advocate for appropriate access to resources to assist individuals, groups with a
common link and families.
i. To establish a youth center that will meet the needs of our youth in a positive and
meaningful way.
j. To provide key skills in adjusting to new life i.e. language and confidence skills (but does
not replace / substitute cultural orientation).
k. To sensitize and create awareness to refugee community on PSEA (Prevention of Sexual
Exploitation and Abuse).
l. Perform any other related task as may be assigned.

4. Personal Development
The incumbent will acquire information about IOM and basic knowledge in the area of
Migration and will gain in-site experience in working in an international multi-cultural
environment, with an intergovernmental organization.

5. Required Qualifications
• Diploma/Degree in Social work and Counselling psychology
• Good knowledge of Microsoft office and internet applications
