NGO ACCOUNTANT JOB IN NAIROBI

A local NGO is recruiting for the position of Accountant.
Location: Nairobi
Duration: Fixed term contract

Job Summary:
Provide leadership in the formulation and implementation of financial and accounting policies and advise the Steering Committee on finance issues affecting the NGO.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervising and overseeing the finance and accounts functions of the project;
Policy generation and co-ordination of the Finance function.
Enforcing financial discipline across the Implementing Partners and ensuring that they operate within the laid down Financial Policy framework;
Ensuring the project complies with tax requirements and that statutory returns are made on time;
To review the organization’s internal control systems to ensure their suitability in safeguarding the project;

Preparing of budgets and ensuring budgetary controls are in place;
Monitor the treasury function and make necessary and ensure that the organization does not lose any deposits thus affecting the allocated budget;
Ensuring that financial statements and other statutory and management reports are duly prepared and submitted to relevant authorities on time;
Prepare financial statements to ensure that financial benchmarks are being met;
Compliance with recognized financial and accounting standards;
Compliance with audit recommendations;
Monitoring of the Implementing Partners Budget to ensure all partners are within the allocated budget;
Preparation of financial quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports for review by the Steering Committee to the donor;
Preparation of project Audit schedules and Final project Accounts and overseeing the Successful completion of project Annual Audit;
Coordination of purchase of office assets and furniture;
Organizing for all Equipment Insurances.

(a) Level of Education/Academic Qualification
Bachelors Degree in Finance/Accounting

(b) Specialized Training/Professional Qualifications
CPA Part 2 Section 4 or equivalent.

(c)Competencies/Abilities/Skills Required
Knowledge of international standards of financial reporting
Ability to maintain accounting records, analyze and prepare reports and statutory returns.
Ability to operate computer assisted accounting and other packages is also mandatory.
Sufficient knowledge of accounting and book keeping
Working knowledge of computerized accounting packages and other computer application packages
Computer literacy in word processing, spreadsheets, including preparation of graphs, tables and charts with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Professional acumen and high level of integrity to be able to handle assets, cash and cash related transactions.
Good interpersonal skills to be able to relate to people of diverse backgrounds.
Attention to detail to be able to scrutinize payment supporting documents before effecting payment
Planning and organizing ability to be able to accomplish tasks, file and retrieve accounting documents
Effective communication both oral and written
Good organizing skills in order to schedule payments, prepare reports, classify, archive and retrieve documents within required time frames.
Very keen attention to detail
Ability to work under pressure

(d)Relevant Work Experience
At least three (3) years experience in Finance and management of donor funds
