Vacancy Announcement: Forester
The Role
The holder will provide sound knowledge and administration skills to forest growing, harvesting, protection, accessibility, productivity, and sustainability.
Activities
Advising on good forestry practice;
Advising on the establishment of the most appropriate tree species (whether by planting or natural regeneration), budgeting, access, ecological surveys and forest certification;
Organising the growing, harvesting, marketing and sale of timber;
Planning and implementing work programmes and ensuring effective use of resources to meet the current objectives of the forest area;
Supervising forest workers and contractors in the field, which may include negotiation with subcontracting companies;
Liaising with customers, timber merchants, the public and local authorities
Keeping up to date with changes in legislation and other developments;
Working to and maintaining globally-recognised forest certification;
Planning and controlling budgets and preparing costing and financial forecasts;
Monitoring existing forestry practices;
Protecting forest from illegal felling, pests and diseases;
Ensuring that the presence of forest does not detrimentally affect the surrounding environment and wildlife by damaging wildlife habitats, water supplies or soil.

Person Specification
The key personal attributes of forestry officers include:
BSc in Forestry
At least 5 years post qualification experience in a busy forest environment
Ability to supervise others, and work as part of a team
Ability and confidence to manage long-term projects
Strong written and spoken communication skills
High standard of numeracy
High level of computer literacy.
