CABI Africa implements research and development projects across sub-Saharan Africa in four major themes; - Trade and Commodities, Invasive Species, Knowledge for Development and Knowledge Management. 

Social science research is an essential part of CABI’s development activities and the role will be to lead social science research supporting CABI projects implemented in Africa. 

The focus will be on qualitative and quantitative research, to deliver situation analyses and needs assessments, and to understand and evaluate the outcomes and impacts of CABI and partners’ interventions. 

The senior scientist will work with other CABI staff to design and implement studies, as well as advise and support others on socioeconomic elements of a range of projects in the four themes. 

The scientist will be responsible for analysing and reporting on results and findings. He/she will also have the opportunity to contribute to business development.

Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) is pleased to announce a request for research proposals under the Strengthening Education Systems in East Africa (SESEA) Project. 

The research targets five key thematic areas: Teaching and Learning; Teacher Development; School Management and Leadership; Parent and Community Involvement; and Education Systems Factors
 
What is SESEA? AKFC, together with specialized agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), is currently implementing SESEA: a five-year project aimed at strengthening education systems and ultimately improving learning outcomes for boys and girls at the pre-primary and primary levels in rural areas of Coastal Kenya, Southern Tanzania and West Nile Uganda. 

Promoting learning and dialogue through research on education East Africa is one of the key objectives of the SESEA project.

Available funding and research duration

The SESEA research initiative has funds to be awarded as grants at two levels of funding: 

(1) CAD $60,000 to CAD $100,000/project for research projects addressing at least one thematic area involving at least one of the following: Kenya, Uganda, or Tanzania; and 

(2) CAD $100,000 to CAD $500,000/project for research projects addressing more than one thematic areas involving at least one of the following countries: Kenya, Uganda, or Tanzania, with a focus on at least one of the following criteria- systems impact, student impact, or school impact.

All research must be completed by March 31, 2017.

Duties / Responsibilities
 
The Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) Director will lead all monitoring and evaluation and research activities for the anticipated Orphans and Vulnerable Children program in Kenya. 

The M&E Director will provide day-to-day management of the program’s monitoring and evaluation and research activities working with the program staff, external consultants, implementing partners
and key stakeholders.

The M&E Director will report directly to the project Chief of Party (COP).

The position will be reporting to the Chief of Party (CoP).

Requirements / Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in Monitoring and Evaluation, Public Health, Health Management, Sociology, International Affairs, Public Policy, Public Administration, Biostatistics, Statistics/Social Research and/or in a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in design and management of Monitoring and Evaluation and Research programs, preferably with respect to child welfare and protection systems strengthening, capacity building, economic strengthening, and service delivery;
  • Expertise in M&E-related activities such as statistical analysis, impact evaluation, performance evaluations, instrument design and management, and M&E training;
  • Strong interpersonal, writing, and oral presentation skills in English;
