Program Description
TechnoServe’s Young Women in Enterprise has been implementing an adolescent girl’s economic empowerment program based in Kawangware and Mathare areas of Nairobi.
Building on the success of the YWE program, TechnoServe will expand to new slums to reach additional girls with a model adapted to reach younger out of school and most vulnerable girls, age 14-19.
Additionally the model will include establishing five girl owned and managed Community Based Organizations (CBOs) that will carry on the work of girl empowerment in their local communities.
This model dubbed ‘for girls by girls’ will empower girls to be agents for change in their lives, household and community.
In this regard the Young Women in Enterprise Program is seeking to engage a Community Based Organisation (CBO) Coordinator who will be located in Nairobi whose work will be to establish, coordinate and operationalize the girls CBOs.
This will be a contract work for 10 months.
General Job Description
Targeting 14-19 years girls and young women, the CBO coordinator will primarily establish the girls CBO’s, ensure they are operational, they are running income generating activities and that they are providing training to vulnerable girls from the community as well as provide necessary linkages .
The CBOs will train target girls in Entrepreneurship, Lifeskills, Financial literacy and employability. Reporting to the Program Manager for the Young Women in Enterprise and working as part of a larger team; the CBO coordinator will:
The coordinator will work with the Senior trainers and the CBO management to mentor the CBOs training team in order to improve the quality of the intervention and build the capacity of CBOs management.
Support the CBOs with the strategic planning process and systems development, identify and start income generating opportunities and develop business plans.
Support the CBOs Management to fundraise and build the CBOs capacity in writing fundraising proposals and to develop strategic alliances and networks.
The coordinator will support the CBOs to constitute a board of directors and will sit in the board meetings.
Facilitate the CBO to register with the appropriate legal body.
Facilitate the CBO to develop and utilize the relevant policy documents & procedures (Constitution, By-laws, Operational manual, Finance policy, HR Policy).
Identify the training gaps and build capacity especially in the following areas: community organization, facilitation skills, fundraising, basic book keeping / finance management, leadership, planning & budgeting, group dynamics, proposal writing, report writing .
Facilitate the CBO to develop and establish sound systems and procedures for project control e.g in finance, programs, procurement, approvals.
Facilitate the CBO to develop simple, effective and user friendly M&E tools, reports and documentations.
Support the CBO establishes networks with other development stakeholders for information and resource sharing.
Minimum Requirement
Bachelor’s Degree in Business (marketing), project management, sociology or other relevant field with at least of 3 years experience in a role that involves institutional capacity building, fundraising, strategic planning, and business management.
Demonstrated capability in managing people.
Strong interpersonal and cross cultural skills
Excellent communication skills required
Ability to communicate effectively across a range of seniority levels
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
