HEALTH AND SAFETY OFFICER

Summary:
The main job purpose is to ensure the Programme's compliance with legal and other regulatory requirements regarding Health and
Safety in the entire Programme premises.
REPORTING LINES:
The post holder reports to the Chief Operating Officer
JOB DIMENSIONS:
The Health & Safety Officer will work closely with Senior Managers, and establish close working relationships with all members of
staff across the entire Programme, including those working in its satellite research sites.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordinating the implementation of the Health and Safety programmes which are consistent with the Programme’s Health &
Safety Policy.
• Implementing effective safe work control procedures and systems in the workplace in order to comply with legal and other
regulatory guidelines, which will be applied consistently by all employees throughout the Programme’s facilities.
• Carrying out regular workplace health and safety inspections and audits to ensure that Health & Safety policies are being
effectively implemented and followed; maintaining records of the inspection and audit findings and liaising with Senior
Managers in coordinating implementation of the recommendations.
• Keeping up to date with new legislation and maintaining a working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and
Environmental legislation and developments in biomedical and healthcare industry and liaising with regulatory agencies (e.g.,
Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSHS), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), etc.
to ensure compliance.
• Liaising with relevant government regulatory authorities and approved Health & Safety Advisers and service providers on
health and safety matters, including statutory OSH trainings (fire safety, first aid etc) and audits.
• Maintaining system for recording, reporting and investigating workplace injuries, accidents/incidents and dangerous
occurrences involving staff and company equipment, providing monthly statistical summaries to Management and drawing
attention to significant trends and occurrences.
• Liaising with the Human Resource Department and Senior Management to identify, coordinate, and conduct Health and
Safety trainings and induction for all employees, students and visitors.
• Liaising with Human Resource Department and the Occupational Health Service Nurse to establish an Occupational Health
Service database, including management of records of staff vaccinations, occupational injuries and illnesses, and statutory
medical examinations.
• Coordinating investigations on workplace health and safety concerns, accidents/incidents, dangerous occurrences, injuries and
ill health as outlined in the OSH Act 2007 and other relevant legislation and guidelines.
• Coordinating the Health and Safety Committee meetings and take minutes of discussions.
• Coordinating Waste Management Program for Programme.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCE:
• A Bachelor of Science degree in a relevant field (Biomedical, Environmental Sciences, Health & Safety related, Engineering or
equivalent).
• Postgraduate training in Occupational Safety and Health will be an added advantage.
• In depth knowledge of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) 2007 and other related regulatory legislation and
requirements.
• At least two (2) years working experience in implementing Health & Safety management systems in a medium to large
institution/company, experience in a research environment or healthcare institution will be an added advantage.
• Excellent computing skills including Microsoft Office (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
• Work planning skills
• A good team player with excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and multicultural
teams.
• Good communication (including both oral and written) skills.
• Effective multi-tasking skills, with ability to coordinate, prioritize, organize and work independently under minimal
supervision

DATA MANAGER

Summary:
The post holder will be part of the KIPMAT/ Intergrowth teams, based in Kilifi. The position holder will work closely with study
investigators and the ICT department to develop and manage systems for collecting, storing and analysing research data, & nbsp; The
candidate will be expected to take a lead role in study administration and training of staff.
REPORTING LINES:
The post holder will report to Bryn Kemp and Jay Berkley.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Data Handling:
• Manage systems and tools for collecting, entering, editing, cleaning, storing, archiving, retrieving, organizing, and transferring
data between all study systems
• Carry out data review, validation including discrepancy checking, and cleaning and report generation of all records generated
from the databases.
• Generate reports including Verification error reports, Comments reports, Constraint reports list of all problems experienced in
the sites with regard to data collection.
• Perform data entry using the developed databases as well as data transcription into Case Report Forms (CRFs).
• Manage data entry staff (permanent or casual) in collaboration with Administration and PIs and monitor performance.
• Perform documentation of existing processes and participate in staff cross training.
Training and Supervision
• Coordinate data management and data entry training for new study members.
• Liaise with fieldworkers and study nursing staff to ensure essential training requirements are delivered.
Administration
• Work with existing team members to manage procurement and ordering processes for all study equipment.
• Maintain master study files to ensure that protocols and reports are up to date and available for audit purposes.
Perform any ad-hoc duties as required by senior study personnel.
SKILLS AND COMPETENCE:
Skills and Qualifications:
• A Bachelor Degree in Public Health, Life Sciences, Computer Science or Medical Statistics.
• Should have strong interest in child health or nutrition, or other priority areas of public health research.
• Able to work independently and formulate solutions to complex problems.
• A good communicator who is able to work in a team.
Desirable
• Experience in hospital or field-based studies, database implementation, data collection and collation, archiving, analysis and
reporting.
• Training in Good Clinical Practice.
• Working knowledge of relational database management systems such as Filemaker, OpenClinica, PHP/MySQL or MS Access,
would be advantageous.
• Ability to prioritise their own work.

ASSISTANT RESEARCH OFFICER

Summary:
The post is part of a Wellcome Trust Research Training Fellowship (for Kelsey Jones) on the immunological consequences of acute
malnutrition in childhood. The post holder will be involved in research projects associated with the Fellowship and work largely under
the direction of Kelsey Jones and Jay Berkley. They will perform a wide range of laboratory immunological assays including flow
cytometry, cell culture, and ELISA as part of the ImCAM study (immunological consequences of childhood acute malnutrition). The
aim of this study is to assess the innate immune characteristics of a cohort of severely malnourished children during nutritional
rehabilitation. The post holder will assist in analysis of all immunologic and experimental data generated by the study. The post holder
will receive full laboratory training in all aspects of the study, as well as in relevant bioinformatic and statistical approaches.
REPORTING LINES:
The post holder will report to Kelsey Jones and Jay Berkley.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Processing acute blood samples
• Maintaining and managing a sample library and database.
• Stimulating, labeling and fixing cells for flow cytometric analysis.
• Performing flow cytometric analysis
• Cell culture.
• Harvesting supernatants and performing ELISA.
• Simple microbiological culture techniques
• Participating in weekly lab meetings.
• Assisting in the generation of new assays.
• Present data or report on literature as directed.
• Support and train other staff in laboratory techniques as directed.
• Assist with analysis of complex immunological datasets.
• Help to generate novel ideas for studies on childhood malnutrition and infectious disease.
